As an entrepreneur, you have a vision of the way things should be, and the passion, desire and discipline to bring that vision to life. On the one hand, if a task needs to be done, you'd just as soon do it yourself. On the other hand, you know that you cannot do everything alone. You need a team of committed individuals around you who understand your vision and share your desire for making it a reality. An important part of your team will be the lawyer you engage to form your company (if you're a startup), draft your key agreements and provide legal counsel as uncertainties arise. Although many factors need to be considered when making such a choice, above all else you need a lawyer who speaks your language: Entrepreneur, not Legalese. For me, being fluent in Entrepreneur means, first of all, understanding both the legal and business challenges an entrepreneurial company faces, so that business necessities drive legal decision making and not the other way around. Second, it means being as responsive to your needs as you are to those of your customers, industry partners and funding sources. Third, it means knowing that although clients often need sophisticated legal counsel, they can’t afford to pay for it as though they were a Fortune 500 company. In other words, you need a lawyer who "gets it." I am such a lawyer, and if you're interested in learning more, please contact me.
